Healthy Street Food

Street food is so delicious that the word “street food” itself left us mouth watering.

We all love street food. In countries like India, we can find street venders in every corner of the city. For students managing alone, it becomes easy to get meals at a low cost.

The only drawback of street food is that it falls under junk food. And, junk food is not good for our health.

But, don’t worry there are many street foods that are healthy and you can have them without worrying much about your health.

Here is the list of 20 healthy street food:

1. Parathas

Indians are very fond of eating varieties of parathas be it aloo paratha or cabbage paratha.

The reason behind not calling it unhealthy is that it is mostly stuffed with vegetables.

Moreover, it is also prepared on the spot , so you can ensure that the person uses less oil to make it.

And, parathas itself is made of atta(wheat flour), so nothing wrong with this.

2. Bhel Puri

Bhel puri is a very popular indian street food. And, actually it is not at all bad for health.

It is made of puffed rice(murmura) ,which is not only light in snack,but also a good source of protein and fibre.

Added to it are veggies like tomato, onion and coriander.

Topped with lemon and green chutney.

There is absolutely no unhealthy ingredient included in this street food.

3. Sandwich


Sandwich is also one of the popular street foods in India, especially among students.

I am not saying that all sandwiches are healthy.

If you want to eat a sandwich then i will suggest you to go for vegetable sandwich as this one is the healthiest among all.

Most sandwich vendors offer a brown bread (whole wheat bread) option also.

You must choose brown bread over white bread keeping your health in mind.

4. Sweet Potatoes Chaat

Many people have the wrong perception for potatoes being unhealthy and leading to weight gain.

This is completely false, for potatoes, be it regular ones or sweet potatoes , both are good for health.

Sweet potatoes are loaded with a number of nutrients like vitamins A,B and C, and minerals like iron, potassium and manganese,  along with fiber.

During winters, many street vendors sell sweet potato chat.

So, you can have it without worrying much about your health.

5. Momos


Momos is very popular in North and North-east India.

This street is a healthy and filling snack.

Vegetables are stuffed inside the parcels made of rice flour (sometimes refined flour is also used ,so be careful) to make it more healthier.

Momos are usually steamed and served with some spicy sauces .

6. Corn On The Cob

Corn on the cob is one of the healthiest street foods in India.

Corn is low in calories, fat and is a good source of protein and fiber.

It is a good source of vitamin C.

So, it is totally safe to consume.

Corns are sold both in boiled and roasted form, of them my favourite is roasted.

7. Idli


Idli is the most preferred breakfast in the southern part of India and now also in most other states.

Idlis are good for health as they do not contain much oil and are steamed also.

So you can definitely consider it as a healthy street food.

8. Sundal (Boiled Chickpea)


Chickpeas is rich in protein and fiber.

A cup of chickpeas provides one-third of an adult’s daily protein need.

Sundal is nothing but boiled chickpeas served with onion, tomato and other spices.

So, no doubt it is also a healthy indian street food.

9. Poha


Poha is a very popular and common breakfast in India.

It is made of flattened rice along with veggies like onions,potatoes and other seasonings like chillies and coriander.

Since it is cooked with less oil and preservatives, it also comes under the list of healthy indian street food.

10. Chana Chor

Chana chor is the same as bhel.

It is usually made of chickpeas that are roasted and spiced.

11. Fresh Fruit Juice

Fruits are always good for the human body as they provide us vitamins and minerals.

You can instruct the vender to use less sugar or else avoid it totally.

Ask him to shake if you are totally looking to increase its health quotient.

So, it is definitely a healthy thing.

12. Boiled Peanuts

If you are carving in the evening then, boiled peanuts is a very good snacks option.

It is good for our bones, teeth, nerves, muscles and for hair growth also.

It is a rich source of vitamin E and antioxidants.

13. Pop Corn


Popcorn comes under very light food items which one can have easily while roaming around the city.

It is also considered as the healthiest snack.

It is loaded with important nutrients and offers a variety of health benefits.

14. Fruit Salad / Fruit Chaat

The only thing you should keep in mind while having this chaat is that fruits should be looking fresh.

It is easy to digest as the vada is made up by using fermentation methods.

Curd also provide good amount of probiotics which is good for us.

17. Khaman


This is another, mouth watering gujarati snack made of gram flour and subsequently steamed.

Khaman is popular as a morning snack. It’s low glycemic index makes it good for diabetics.

Further the fermentation of dal enhances its nutritive value.

So, you can enjoy this healthy snack anytime in a day.

18. Dosa


Dosa is one of the most popular street foods in India.

This street food is a great source of protein for vegetarians, as it is made of rice batter and urad dal which boasts a complete amino acid profile.

Dosa is also quite light so does not add too many calories.

You can opt for paper dosa or add paneer,spinach, carrot filling to make it more nutritious.

19. Kebabs & Tikkas


Kebabs are made of vegetables,paneer or soya beans and all of these are healthy for us.

Just ensure that food colorings are not used as they are linked to hyperactivity,asthma and even cancer.

So, kebabs and tikkas also come under healthy recipes, it’s just that you have consumed them in limited quantities.

20. Coconut Water With Cream

Coconut water has always been the healthiest street food.

You will find this on every corner of any good city.

Coconut water prevents kidney stones and it has benefits against diabetes also.
